Aloe Vera Leaf Dry Extract
Alo Vera Leaf
- Scientific name: Aloe arborescens
- Family: Liliaceae
- Origin: Brazil
Aloe vera is a medicinal plant with several health benefits, such as helping treat reflux and gastritis, relieving constipation, and preventing tooth decay.
In addition, Aloe Vera (Aloe arborescens) can also be used in various beauty treatments, especially for hair and skin, as it helps remove makeup, prevents wrinkles, and stimulates hair growth.
What it's for
Aloe vera contains mucilaginous substances and quercetin, which act as emollients, helping to renew damaged skin cells. It also contains polysaccharides and plant hormones that stimulate and hydrate cells.
Furthermore, being rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E, calcium, magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc, and phosphate, aloe vera acts on tissues, having a healing effect, and also helps strengthen the immune system.
Aloe vera can also be used to promote hair and skin health and to help treat anemia, arthritis, headaches, muscle pain, wounds, flu, insomnia, athlete's foot, inflammatory conditions, constipation, and digestive problems.
Possible Side Effects
Ingesting aloe vera can cause cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, reddish urine, liver problems, and hypokalemia, a condition caused by a lack of potassium in the blood, causing symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, tingling, numbness, and cardiac arrhythmia. The use of aloe vera on the skin can cause redness, dermatitis, and a burning sensation in some people, which may be associated with the presence of anthraquinone residues in the gel used.
When it is not indicated
Aloe vera is not indicated for people with allergies to aloe vera or any other plant in the Xanthorrhoeaceae family.
Ingestion of aloe vera is contraindicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 12 years of age, people with diarrhea, liver problems, intestinal obstructions or stenosis, atony (lack of normal muscle movement), appendicitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, unexplained abdominal pain, or severe dehydration.
People with diabetes or who are using medications or other medicinal plants should always consult a doctor before ingesting aloe vera. This is because aloe vera can alter the action of some medications.
Moisturizing creams, soaps, cleansing gels and alcohol gel are some of the products that usually contain Aloe vera in their composition. One of Cleopatra's favorites, it became known in Egypt as the plant of immortality for its benefits to skin and hair care. Beyond cosmetology, Aloe vera also presents antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
Aloe vera leaves can be divided into three parts: the latex (external juice), the central gelatinous portion rich in water and polysaccharides, and the external cuticle. The quality and effectiveness of Aloe vera depend largely on extraction, processing, and storage of its active ingredients.
- The main benefits of Aloe Vera are:
- Stimulate hair growth
Aloe vera has enzymes that help remove dead cells from the scalp, and is an excellent source of hydration and minerals for hair fibers. Therefore, hair can grow faster and stronger.
- Dandruff
Dandruff is formed by plaques of dead cells, so aloe vera can be used to treat dandruff, as it contains enzymes that eliminate dead cells.
- Treat Reflux and Gastritis
Because of its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, aloe vera is a good home remedy for treating reflux and gastritis, relieving symptoms such as heartburn, excess gas, nausea, and stomach pain. See other home remedies indicated for reflux and gastritis.
- Combat hair loss
Aloe vera helps in the production of collagen and, therefore, helps to fix hair fibers to the scalp, preventing hair loss. In addition, this medicinal plant contains minerals and water, strengthening the entire hair fiber and making it stronger and less brittle.
- Preventing Skin Infections
Aloe vera, in cream or gel form, prevents skin infections because it is rich in polyphenols, antioxidant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action that inhibit the growth of bacteria that can cause infections. Thus, aloe vera can help heal wounds, treat burns, and ulcers.
- Preventing Cavities
Aloe vera can be used as a mouthwash, as it can help reduce plaque, which is a colorless film composed of bacteria that form and adhere to the teeth, being the main cause of cavities, tartar, and gingivitis.
- Relieve constipation
Due to its prebiotic action, aloe vera relieves constipation by stimulating the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, balancing the intestinal flora and improving its function.
- Controlling Diabetes
Aloe vera may help control diabetes, as this medicinal plant improves insulin sensitivity, balancing blood glucose levels.
- Relieve skin irritations
Applying aloe vera gel to the skin provides quick relief from itching and burns related to prolonged sun exposure.
- Combat wrinkles
Aloe vera stimulates collagen production in the skin, which is the substance responsible for maintaining elasticity and firmness. Thus, when used regularly, aloe vera moisturizes and helps reduce wrinkles and eliminate some expression lines.
- Removing makeup from the face
Aloe vera can be used to remove makeup from the face, as it does not contain chemicals, promotes skin hydration, and relieves irritation caused by substances present in makeup.
- Lightening the skin
Aloe vera contains aloin and aloesin, substances with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, which reduce or prevent pigmentation, helping to lighten the skin naturally, making it a good home remedy for dark spots or melasma. See other home remedies to remove skin blemishes.
- Skin repair
Made up of 96% water and 4% carbohydrates, Aloe vera penetrates deeply into the skin layers.
- The gel obtained from the leaf helps to:
- Improves joint, elasticity and flexibility of the body
Polysaccharides help reduce skin aging and inflammation, contributing to:
- Relief of bursitis, tendonitis and rheumatoid arthritis by reducing inflammation in wrists and fingers
- Improved hydration of body tissues through sulfur compounds, reducing organ stiffness
- Promotes oral health
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Pharmacy & BioAllied Sciences showed Aloe vera benefits in treating aphthous stomatitis, gingivitis and periodontitis. Aloe-based dental gel was also more effective against cavity-causing bacteria.
- Fighting depression
A study published in April 2020 evaluated Aloe vera extract powder in people with pre-diabetes and depression. Results showed that a daily dose of 500mg significantly reduced depression scores after eight weeks.
- Possible ally against cancer
While no consensus exists, research published in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention (2015) suggests Aloe vera may inhibit cancer cell growth and enhance the effectiveness of certain conventional treatments.
- Control of diabetes
Studies conducted at Unifesp indicate a hypoglycemic effect of Aloe vera, helping reduce blood glucose and regulate insulin absorption. Aloe-based gels may also help prevent diabetic foot complications.
